Introduction

Hello and Good Day Everybody !
I am a new teacher in the school named Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Datuk Bendahara. This school is situated in Jasin, Melaka.
I am accepted to be one of the Guru Sandaran Terlatih (GST) here. There are 10 of us, my batch joined the schools in 27th June 2011.
In this blog, I share with you my experience and great things that are happening to me in the school.
There are also notes and things for good English class usages, so feel free to browse them whenever there are gaps between classes.
My mentor here is Hajjah Zaorah and she has been guiding me to be a better English teacher.

Learning Outcomes         : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:-
3.1 Listen to, read, view and respond to literary works by
a.Understanding in one’s own words the story and poem heard and read, and giving one’s own opinion of the text.
c. explaining the message the writer is trying to convey and discussing how this relates to one’s life.
Learning Objectives       : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:-
1.     Express their opinions on the meaning of stanza 1,2 and 3.
2.     Relate tenggang’s experience with the students’ life, whether similar or different.
Activities  :
1.     ULBS is conducted.
2.     Teacher elicits information from students on their experience in studying in a boarding school.
3.     The writer of the poem ‘si tenggang homecoming’ is introduced, (Muhammad Haji Salleh).
4.     Teacher elicits information and opinions from students about the myth of tenggang.
5.     Stanza 1,2 and 3 is discussed one by one, and students are led to understand the poet’s intended meaning of the stanzas, while explaining the difficult terms such as traverse, predicament, predecisions etc.
6.     Students are asked to express opinions to the class about what they have learnt.
7.     They are also asked on how can they benefit from the stanzas.
8.     Teacher holds a discussion with students on tenggang’s experience.

Theme/Learning Area           : Hari Raya Celebration/ Asthetics
Learning Outcomes         : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:-
Present information to different audiences by
  1. Composing, revising and editing drafts, and checking accuracy of spelling, punctuation and grammar,
  1. reading aloud written materials such as reports clearly and fluently.

Learning Objectives       : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:-
1) work together in groups to compose a Hari raya song that is grammatically correct
2) present the Raya song in front of the class.

Activities  :
1.     ULBS is conducted.
2.     Teacher mentions there are lots of Raya songs at present in Bahasa, and there needs Raya songs in English
3.     The students are gathered in groups of 5 members each, and they write a Raya song , that follows the tune of any Raya songs they know. Teacher goes round to check on their grammar.
4.     The songs are presented, and teacher comments on the pronunciation, and whether they get the message across.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:-

1.     Perform the borrowing process smoothly.

Activities        :
1.     Students borrow books and undergo the procedure.
2.     Students are asked on the method of selection, whether their choice is based on the illustration, title or the author.
3.     Teachers states the importance of enjoying reading the extensive material and the benefits students will get.

Learning Outcomes         :
3.1 Listen to, read, view and respond to literary works by understanding and telling in one’s own words the story and poem heard and read, and giving one’s own opinion of the text.
3.1 Explaining the meaning the writer is trying to convey and discussing how this relates to one’s life.
Learning Objectives       : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:-
1.     List down new vocabulary and the meaning while discussing the poem.
2.     Explain in one’s own words the meaning of stanza one and two.
Activities  :

1.     The poet is introduced, (Rudyard Kipling), and teacher eliciting information from students on their experience in receiving advice from parents.
2.     Students are divided into 4 large groups and they are assigned 10 minutes to try to understand the stanza’s meaning, and then the poem is discussed and the difficult words are explained in context.
3.     Teacher explains stanza one and two, by using the question and answer method and students are lead to the correct intended meaning in the poem. Also, teacher relates the poet’s intended meaning with students’ life. Then, teacher asks a few students of what they have understood from the poem.
4.     The lesson is concluded.

1.     List down new vocabulary and the meaning while discussing the poem.
2.     Explain in one’s own words the meaning of stanza three and four.
3.     Write down two themes and two moral values in the poem.
Activities  :

1.     Teacher recaps previous lessons on stanza one and two, and asks a few terms from stanza one and two.
2.     Teacher explains stanza three and four, by using the question and answer method and students are lead to the correct intended meaning in the poem, and teacher explains the themes. The students are asked to mention the general ideas for the stanza they are assigned to. They also write down the news terms when discussing the poem.
3.     Students are given a chance to share their views on the advices in stanza three and four. Teacher relates the themes and the moral values to their lives.
4.     Students are asked to write down how the themes and the moral values could be implemented and change their lives to the better.
5.     The lesson is concluded.
6.     2 questions are given at the end of the lesson, to test students’ understanding.

Theme/Learning Area     : Error Identification
Learning Outcomes         :
2.3 Present information to different audiences by
f. composing, revising and editing drafts, and checking accuracy of spelling, punctuation and grammar, and
i. using appropriate format, conventions and grammar when presenting information.
Learning Objectives       : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:-
1.     Construct grammatically correct sentences by using correct tenses and vocabulary in a paragraph.
2.     Construct coherent sentences with good vocabulary.
3.     Correct grammatical mistakes
Activities  :
1.     Teacher shows students examples of error identification, and tells the 8 rules of writing a continuous writing. Students are shown the guideline on how to determine whether the paragraph should be in present or past tense and they rewrite paragraph one (only). Also, they are shown a few lines to be corrected together. There are mistakes of inaccurate vocabulary, especially those who have attempted question number 1. They are shown on equivalent English words to replace Malay words such as Hari Raya, pulut and rendang.
2.     The students are given 10 minutes to rewrite their introductory paragraph. While this is done, they are to ask any questions related to grammar. Then, they let their friend to recheck and their friends would correct their mistakes if there are still any.
3.     Teacher selects a paragraph and shows the common mistakes and lets students correct the mistakes, and reminds the students to practice writing on their own and keep on consulting. Teacher collects the paragraphs for checking.
4.     The lesson is concluded
